According to my doctor, once the flu virus is expelled from an infected person, it settles on surfaces and begins to die. After 48 hours have passed, all of the flu viruses will be dead. However, it's possible that the flu in a pandemic will mutate into a form able to live longer than 48 hours, so if I find that out, I'll post it here. If these measures that I'm taking don't protect me (it's possible that they won't) and I catch the flu and don't recover, I obviously won't post the information here, so please be warned.
I will be using gloves to open and read mail. Other things that I buy will be isolated by keeping them exposed to air but out of reach for the period of time it takes to kill the viruses. Groceries are problematic. The best advice for handling groceries seems to be to thoroughly wash them in soap and water (for produce), or in bleach and water (for groceries in waterproof containers). The safest way is to combine techniques, waiting and washing.
